The Importance of Non-Toxic Candles

We live in a quickly evolving health-conscious world and the demand for household staples like candles are among the products health-conscious people seek out to find ones that offer healthier options for their home. As such, the importance of using non-toxic candles in our homes cannot be overstated – I’m about to show you why! Many people are unaware of the potential risks associated with conventional candles which release harmful chemicals into the air when burned.

Understanding the Risks of Conventional Candles

To better understand the risks conventional candles have in our homes let’s break it out into three categories:

1. The Candle Wick

The wick is the lifeline of the candle and not all wicks are created equal. Let me explain.

Historically, many candle wicks included lead cores to enhance the rigidity and burning consistency. When burned, these lead-core wicks could release harmful lead vapors into the air, posing significant health risks, especially to children and pregnant women.

In 2003, the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) banned the manufacturing and sale use of lead core wicks. These regulations have curtailed the use of lead in wicks here in the United States but many candle companies still use wick materials made from bleached paper, zinc, and tin to try and enhance the burn and keep the wick upright.  Therefore, concerns remain about wicks treated with other heavy metals or chemical stiffeners that can still compromise air quality.

So what’s the safer choice to look for?

Make sure you are purchasing candles that use wicks made from unbleached cotton or wood wicks that aren’t treated and soaked in synthetic stiffener chemicals.

2. The Wax

Candle wax is the primary component that determines the quality and longevity of a candle. Unfortunately, a majority of generic store-bought candles today are made with paraffin wax, derived as a byproduct of petroleum. When burned, paraffin wax can release harmful chemicals like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that don’t break down naturally within the body as well as known carcinogens like benzene and toluene when burned. This is harmful to humans and the environment within your home.

So what’s the safer choice to look for?

Choose a natural candle with 100% pure coconut oil or natural beeswax.

3. The Fragrance

Synthetic fragrances are used in most conventional candles to mimic natural scents. These fragrances are a complex mixture of chemicals and can often include hundreds of different ingredients, many of which are not disclosed to consumers due to trade secret protections.

This lack of transparency makes it difficult for consumers to know exactly what they are being exposed to in a confined indoor space.

Common chemicals found in synthetic fragrances include:

  • Phthalates

One of the most concerning chemicals commonly found in generic candles. This is used as a solvent as well as making scents last longer. However, they are known endocrine disruptors and can interfere with the body’s hormone systems potentially leading to reproductive issues, developmental disorders and in increased risk of certain cancers.

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Synthetic fragrances can release VOCs that don’t break down naturally in the body such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and xylene into the air. These compounds can contribute to indoor air pollution and are associated with a range of health problems, including respiratory irritation, neurological effects, and cancer.

  • Aldehydes

Certain aldehydes, such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, are often present in synthetic fragrances. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and both aldehydes can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation and allergic reactions.

  • Synthetic Musk

Chemicals like musk ketone and musk xylene, used in some fragrances for a musky odor – many times around the holidays for scented candles are persistent in the environment and have been associated with skin irritation and hormone disruption.

The health impacts of these chemicals can vary widely, from immediate effects like headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation to more long-term concerns such as hormonal imbalances and increased cancer risk. Particularly concerning is the impact on indoor air quality where candles burn as they can be a significant source of indoor pollution, especially in poorly ventilated spaces.

Certain individuals, such as those with asthma, allergies, or chemical sensitivities, may be more susceptible to the effects of these toxic fragrances, experiencing heightened symptoms when exposed to synthetically fragranced scented candles.

So what’s the safer choice to look for?

I would recommend only purchasing candles made with pure essential oils or a mixture of pure essential oils to avoid any contact with chemicals that are typical of fragrances found in candles you would find in stores or online from the larger candle brands.

Insert The Natural Sloth Company

Natural Sloth provides some of the best organic candles on the market today. Why? because they specifically focus on all three candle components to make the best-formulated candle product and nothing else. Their brand has become a movement for consumers searching for the perfect non-toxic organic candle.

My focus of this Natural Sloth review is to show what sets them apart from other brands is its unwavering commitment to using only organic and non-toxic ingredients in its candles. The company understands the importance of creating a safe and healthy home environment for the customers they sell their products to and just focuses on the basics.

Another notable aspect of Natural Sloth is its commitment to transparency in providing customers with complete information about its products. Natural Sloth helps educate consumers about the potential risks of conventional candles and the benefits of switching to a toxin free option.

Natural Sloth’s Organic Ingredients for a Healthy Home

Let’s break down how Natural Sloth creates each of the three components of their candle and why they are far superior to conventional candles you find in stores.

But first, Natural Sloth Candles are MADE SAFE Certified earning them the reputation as a trusted brand dedicated to the quality and safety of their products free from fillers, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, or parabens. But this is just the start, let me explain.

Natural Sloth’s Wicks

Natural Sloth mainly uses wooden wicks (they offer a small variety of candles that use unbleached organic cotton wicks free from lead, zinc, and heavy metals). This allows their candles to have a steady flame while burning wider and slower than a standard wick.

Each wooden wick is sustainably sourced from FSC-certified mills and isn’t treated with heavy metals or chemical stiffeners. The wooden wick also helps create a “mini campfire” environment as you’ll hear a calming crackling as the wick burns.

For every $100 spent with Natural Sloth, their wick supplier plants a tree with Trees For The Future, an organization working to end hunger and poverty.

Natural Sloth’s Wax

Each Natural Sloth candle is hand-poured and uses only pure natural yellow beeswax and organic coconut oil. That’s it! There are no fillers or paraffin wax (petroleum byproduct) included.

Natural Sloth’s Fragrance

Candle scents are the reason most people buy candles – me included! This is where things get truly exciting around my love of Natural Sloth.

Their candles are only made with a blend of organic, wildcrafted essential oils that are free from any fillers, artificial additives, or synthetic chemicals and make them naturally hypoallergenic.

They exclusively use pure essential oils for their products because they are obtained through steam-distilled and cold-pressing methods derived from various plant parts such as seeds, flowers, leaves, stems, and roots.

Why Natural Sloth Organic Candles Stand Out in My Home

I’ve used Natural Sloth candles in my home for quite a while.  I like that their candles have a lighter scent to them and don’t flood the room with an overwhelming fragrance. This lighter scent also lets me light more than one candle at once across different rooms without the scents conflicting with each other.

Not only do these candles smell amazing, but they also burn evenly and last longer than traditional candles. The high-quality ingredients used by Natural Sloth ensure a longer burning time, allowing me to enjoy their gentle therapeutic glow for extended periods.

Natural Sloth Review: My Personal Experience

My Natural Sloth review wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t share my favorite personal example to demonstrate the quality of using an organic candle brand.

I have several Air Doctors throughout my house that I’ve used for years to filter out anything in the air responsible for indoor air pollution. When I’ve used generic candle brands in the past, my Air Doctor will immediately pick up on the chemicals in the air and turn on to filter them out.

This has NOT happened ever since I started using Natural Sloth products. This just shows how candles can be toxic to humans and not even realize it. Feel free to check out my AirDoctor review HERE if you’d like to learn more – they are one of my favorites.

Handling and Maintenance: The User Experience

When it comes to the user experience, Natural Sloth Candles excels in every aspect. The candles are thoughtfully designed for easy and safe handling. The containers look like mini mason jars and are made from sturdy durable glass. You can transport the candles and wax melts around your house without the feeling of easy breakage if something were to knock them over.

The brand uses sleek minimalistic packaging around the handcrafted containers and complements the decor of any area in your home.

The candles have a long burn time. The 9oz candles can burn up to 50 hours!

The natural ingredients create a clean burn without leaving any soot or residue around the container or surfaces.

Final Conclusion: Why Natural Sloth Stands Out

To sum up my Natural Sloth Review, I’ll quickly summarize why they are one of my favorite go-to candle bands.

  • Ingredient Transparency and Authenticity

Natural Sloth’s dedication to transparency around their products is their main message. Their candles are made with pure certified organic and wild harvested ingredients and stand out across a wide variety of candle brands using harmful chemicals and ingredients. Having the MADE SAFE Certification offers another layer of trust as one of the only brands offering certified candles clear of harmful ingredients.

  • Candle Cost

We all know that conventional candles are expensive in general. One might think that organic candles made in the USA would be even more expensive. This is not the case!  Natural Sloth offers a competitively priced candle that has the purest ingredients and very long burning times (50 hours for a 9oz candle). Because paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, most generic candle brands use wax so their candles burn quicker making their customers have to buy them more often.

  • Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Practices

Natural Sloth prioritizes eco-friendly and sustainable practices throughout their manufacturing process. They go above and beyond to minimize their environmental impact and ensure that their products are not only safe for consumers but also for the planet. They focus on ethically sourced materials and eco-friendly ingredients like natural beeswax, FSC-certified wood wicks, and organic cotton wicks, which are all bio-degradable and have a significantly lower environmental impact compared to conventional candle materials. Additionally, Natural Sloth pays close attention to their packaging. They strive to use recycled and recyclable materials whenever possible, reducing waste. I can confidently recommend trying out Natural Sloth if you’re looking to try a new candle company!
